Patrick Mahomes is remembering his first time meeting Travis Kelce!

The Kansas City Chiefs star, 28, shared his first impressions of teammate Kelce, 34, as being “a great dude” as he recalled their initial meeting at a press conference during the Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night event on Monday.

“I knew of him obviously, because he was such a great football player even before I got [to the Chiefs],” Patrick told PEOPLE at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. “I think my biggest impression was, ‘that’s a tall guy,’ because I’d never seen a guy that tall man be able to move like that.”

‘But just a good dude, man, I think I knew that from day one,” he added.

During his first week on the team, Mahomes shared that Kelce took him and his wife Brittany Mahomes to catch a Kansas City Royals game as they continued to get to know each other.

“We were sitting up front, we were having a great time and that’s kind of built part of the relationship that we have today,” Patrick told PEOPLE.

The quarterback became teammates with Kelce after joining the Chiefs in 2017. Kelce, meanwhile, was drafted to the team as a tight end back in 2013.

On Sunday, Patrick is set to appear on the field with Kelce as the Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers at the Super Bowl LVIII at the Allegiant Stadium. Their arrival in Vegas ahead of the game comes after they beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship on Jan. 28.

This will be Patrick’s fourth Super Bowl appearance with the Chiefs, and the team’s second year in a row at the event after winning the Vince Lombardi trophy last year.

Patrick’s appearance at Monday’s press conference comes a day after his father Patrick Mahomes Sr. was released on a $10,000 bond after his arrest on a DWI charge in Tyler, Texas, on Saturday.

According to jail records, Patrick Sr., 53, was arrested and booked in the Smith County Jail. He was arrested for the third time on a charge of driving while intoxicated, having previously been charged with a DWI in 2018 and 2019.

Mahomes Sr. did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
