Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady’s careers will forever be connected. Widely considered to be the two best quarterbacks to ever live, the two will be compared and debated for years to come as Mahomes draws closer to Brady’s unrivaled accomplishments.

While Brady has two playoff victories over Mahomes, including a Super Bowl win, he recently admitted he’s jealous of the way the Chiefs’ superstar plays the game.

Appearing on The Pivot podcast with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder, Brady said he wished he was less serious during his career in a true moment of candor.

“When I see these young players, I see like Patrick (Mahomes) out there at quarterback, running around, laughing, having fun,” said Brady, partially in jest. “I’m like, ‘I used to be like that. What the hell happened?””

Brady is synonymous with winning after securing seven Super Bowl rings. He was always focused on the ultimate prize, so it’s natural he was fully engaged at all times. It’s hard to joke around when you’re as intense as Brady, after all.

Mahomes hasn’t had that problem, bringing a unique flair and improvisational style to the gridiron. Both approaches clearly work, and there’s no “one way” to play the game.

“I just got too serious,” Brady continued. “I can only look back and think, ‘Okay, if I do it again, which I’ll never do it again, I would be different.’ But the reality is, you can’t.”

The Patriots legend noted he often scowled near the end of his career due to self-criticism. I’m obviously biased, though I prefer watching Mahomes play football than Brady. Few things are as exhilarating as the moment when Mahomes starts scrambling around. You never know what he’s going to do but at the same time, you usually know it’s going to work out.

Brady shouldn’t regret much in his career and he’ll now take over as a broadcaster for Fox Sports. He’ll have a front-row seat to plenty of Mahomes games this year – something tells me Patrick will be sure to bring the fun.
