New Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is urging calm despite a distressing start in the preseason where the starting offense, featuring newcomers Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, has yet to put points on the board. Smith, addressing the media, stressed the deceptive nature of preseason play and drew parallels with his past NFL experiences to keep spirits high amongst fans and players.

“We need to evaluate (players), and so sometimes it can get distorted, good or bad,” Smith told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He referenced historical precedents where preseason performance did not necessarily predict regular season success, citing the Indianapolis Colts during the Peyton Manning era as an example, a team known for poor preseason records but exceptional regular season play.

The lack of scoring has been a pressing issue, particularly as Wilson, who was sidelined with a calf injury for the first game, and Fields, have both struggled to find their rhythm in the new system. Fields, who started the first game in Wilson’s absence, has also been prone to turnovers, adding to the offensive woes.

Despite these struggles, Smith remains confident, recalling his tenure with the Tennessee Titans: “In 2019, I didn’t think we were great in the preseason and come opening day we scored 40-something points against the (Cleveland) Browns. I’m not saying we’re going to do that in Atlanta (in Week 1), but we hope to. It’s just, you’ve got to have context.”

Smith’s optimism comes at a crucial time, as he has the challenging task of uplifting a Steelers offense that languished in the lower tier of NFL scoring rankings over the past three seasons. His move from Atlanta, where he served as head coach but struggled to galvanize a potent offense, to Pittsburgh encapsulates his desire for a turnaround with the Steelers’ latest acquisitions.

However, injuries have clouded the preseason atmosphere. Offensive tackle Troy Fautanu, interior lineman Nate Herbig, running back Jaylen Warren, and wide receiver Roman Wilson are among those nursing injuries. While Fautanu and Roman Wilson are tipped to recover in time for the season opener against Atlanta, Herbig’s season is already over, and Warren’s participation remains in doubt.

As the Steelers gear up for the regular season, Smith’s focus is clear: resolve the preseason issues swiftly and transition into the regular season with both strength and confidence. His track record suggests a belief in dramatic turnarounds, a sentiment Steelers fans are hoping holds true.
