Russell Wilson Shines in Steelers Preseason Closer, Starter Spot Looks Promising

In a promising tune-up for the regular season, Russell Wilson delivered a sharp performance in his final preseason outing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, navigating the team to a swift touchdown against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. After enduring a tough game with three sacks just a week earlier, Wilson, the team’s new acquisition from Denver, displayed improved form and decision-making on Saturday.

Wilson’s stint on the field was brief but impactful. He completed both of his pass attempts for a total of 26 yards.

Despite an initial setback where his first pass to George Pickens resulted in a loss of six yards, Wilson quickly rectified the drive. He connected with Pickens again for a gain of 32 yards, which set up a dynamic 31-yard touchdown run by Cordarrelle Patterson, effectively ending Wilson’s participation after just four plays.

Following Wilson’s exit, Justin Fields took over the quarterback duties and managed to extend the Steelers’ lead by orchestrating a 35-yard touchdown drive. Nevertheless, Fields’ performance was slightly marred by taking two sacks before being bened off.

Executing his plays against a Lions defense that opted to rest many of its starters, Wilson felt prepared for whatever duration he was needed. “I was ready to play however long Coach [Mike] Tomlin wanted me to,” Wilson mentioned during the post-game press conference, indicating readiness and adaptability under the new head coach’s strategy.

Steeler’s head coach Mike Tomlin, without committing to a final decision for the quarterback position for Week 1, maintained his focus on the work ethic over training camp and preseason games. He emphasized that the resolution of the starting quarterback will come later in the week, hinting at Wilson’s strong chance given his number one position on the depth chart since the start of the training camp and his consequent starts in the last two preseason games.

Wilson’s performance, coupled with his leadership in the preseason, positions him as the likely candidate to start as the team heads to Denver for the Broncos’ home opener in Week 2, potentially pitting him against his former team. The decision, reserved for later in the week by Tomlin, remains one of the pivotal talking points as the Steelers conclude their preseason preparations.
