Mason Rudolph Clinches Backup Quarterback Role with Tennessee Titans After Intense Competition

PITTSBURGH — Former Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph has clinched the backup position with the Tennessee Titans, following the team’s decision to trade their third-string QB Malik Willis to the Green Bay Packers.

Rudolph, who switched to the Titans this offseason in pursuit of a new beginning after his stint in Pittsburgh, was not assured the backup spot and faced competition from Willis during the summer. The Titans ultimately opted for Rudolph and traded Willis to Green Bay before the roster deadline.

Rudolph will now be the understudy to Will Levis, who is going into his second season in the NFL with hopes of becoming Tennessee’s next standout young quarterback. Last year, Levis started nine games, amassing 1,808 passing yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

Now 29, Rudolph has a career starting record of 8-4-1 in the NFL. Last season he stepped in for Steelers quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky, propelling the team to the playoffs with 719 passing yards and three touchdowns. Over his career, Rudolph has thrown for 3,085 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Meanwhile, news is still pending on another former Steelers quarterback, Kenny Pickett, who is competing for the backup role behind Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. After being traded to the Eagles, Pickett struggled in the preseason, which led to a contest for the No. 2 spot against third-stringer Tanner McKee, who had impressive moments this summer. It’s anticipated that Pickett will secure the QB2 position, but official depth charts will confirm the details next week.

In Pittsburgh, the starting quarterback is expected to be Russell Wilson with Justin Fields as his backup. Kyle Allen is likely to take the third QB spot, while John Rhys Plumlee might add his versatility to the practice squad.
