Piastri Reveals Hamilton’s Unexpected Initial Response Following Monza Crash

Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri came together a couple of times during the 2023 F1 season, and the Australian driver shared some behind the scenes.

The two drivers had an eventful season when it came to their on-track battles. First, they had a contact during the 2023 Italian Grand Prix at Monza Circuit, and they later also came together in Las Vegas.

Their incident in Italy was especially surprising, as the seven-time World Champion just seemed to be unaware of the Australian’s presence and seemingly just turned into his car.

Piastri immediately reacted to the incident via radio, and as a result, Hamilton was given a five-second penalty for the incident. However, what happened after the race surprised the young Australian driver, who hopes to record his first win in 2024.

Recently, the McLaren driver spoke on the Beyond the Grid podcast, and among other things, he mentioned also the incidents that he had with Hamilton during the 2023 season.

The Australian jokingly noted that the British driver probably doesn’t like him, since they had multiple incidents over the course of the previous season.

“I mean I’ve crashed with Lewis a couple of times. I feel both of them weren’t particularly my fault. I don’t know, maybe he just doesn’t like me.”

After the funny remark, Piastri was quick to explain what really happened after their incident in Monza, as Hamilton immediately found him after the race to shake his hand and apologize, something that doesn’t happen too often according to the 22-year-old.

“The couple of times Lewis and I have had incidents, he’s been very good. I mean the one in Monza, he came up to me straight away and shook my hand and said sorry which you don’t get from everyone on the grid.”

Their incident in Las Vegas was a bit different, as it wasn’t that clear whose fault it really was, but still, the two managed to discuss it to prevent similar situations in the future.

“The one in Vegas was a bit of a 50/50, but we spoke about it and we certainly weren’t angry about it or p****d off with each other, we just spoke about it and what we were trying to do and why it went wrong. From that side of things, he’s been cool to talk to. You certainly don’t get that kind of respect or discussion with other people.”
