Lewis Hamilton Stands Firm: Mercedes Will ‘Bounce Back’ Despite Horrendous Double DNF at Australian GP

The Mercedes F1 team had an outing to forget at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. After a promising start, things quickly went downhill for the Brackley-based team. Lewis Hamilton retired with an engine issue on lap 17 of the race!

His teammate, George Russell, was looking all set for a decent chunk of points until he wrecked his car on the final lap of the Australian GP. On lap 58, the Brit lost control over his W15 and rammed it into the barriers coming out of turn six. However, despite Mercedes’ woes in Australia, Lewis Hamilton is keeping a positive outlook going ahead.

My race was going OK up until the point we suffered the Power Unit failure. It’s quite tough to overtake here but we had gained some positions early on with the Soft tyre. It was unfortunate that we had to retire as there was still a long way to go. I was beginning to press on, but the Power Unit just stopped. These things happen and I know we will bounce back.
Mercedes’ outing around Albert Park has had a huge impact on its position in the 2024 Constructors Championship. The team is currently sitting in fourth place with only 26 points in its name. Moreover, Aston Martin is close behind with 25 points!

Lewis Hamilton insists Mercedes will ‘bounce back’ after a horrendous double DNF at Australian GP

Lewis Hamilton claims the W15 will only ‘improve’ going forward
While Lewis Hamilton has given a positive outlook around Mercedes’s chances going forward, the issue that has hindered the team is its lackluster W15. The 2024 challenger has proved quite unpredictable and has thus, created major problems for the Mercedes think tank!

Despite the issues, Hamilton feels his team can challenge the front runners in the medium term!

We will also improve the car as the season goes on. We have done so in previous years, and I am confident we will do so again. In the short term, I expect we will still find it difficult to challenge further up but we will see what we can do in the medium term.
Lewis Hamilton said in the same interview
The former seven-time world champion is in his final year with the Mercedes F1 team. He’ll be repping the red of Ferrari from next year onwards, and considering this, he wants to end his story with Mercedes on a high note. Hamilton would ideally want to score at least one Grand Prix win this year to bring the curtain down on his glorious stay at Mercedes.
