Lewis Hamilton’s brother is taken aback by the timing of Ferrari’s decision, which comes shortly after Lewis’s departure from Mercedes.

Nicolas Hamilton – brother of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton – was caught off guard when asked about the Mercedes star’s upcoming move to Ferrari in an interview with Sky News. The legendary Brit will join the Italian constructor after wrapping up his 12th and final season with the Silver Arrows in 2024.

Hamilton’s partnership with Mercedes looked unbreakable after a new two-year contract extension was signed last summer, but following an underwhelming end to the 2023 season, the 39-year-old opted to exercise an exit clause in his deal and secure a change of scenery for 2025 and beyond.

Speaking to Sky News’ Kay Burley, Nicolas was asked: “What do you think about your brother going to Ferrari next season?” The 32-year-old was taken aback by the question, producing a nervous cough before offering his answer.

“Erm, oh my god, I wasn’t expecting this question,” he replied. “Look, it’s a great opportunity for him. I think it’s a new chapter for him and I’m 100 per cent behind him like a lot of people are.”

Burley then suggested to Nicolas that the move to Ferrari would help get more people behind his brother’s career, to which he responded: “No, it should be a good year and you know, at the end of the day he needs to do what is best for him and as I said, I’m always going to be behind him regardless.”

After four races of the 2024 season, Hamilton will be feeling justified in his gamble to swap Mercedes for Ferrari. The Silver Arrows have so far picked up just 34 points with the seven-time world champion languishing down in P9 in the Drivers’ Championship standings following the toughest start to a campaign in his career.

“It’s the worst start to a season I’ve ever had. It’s worse than 2009,” he said after a DNF in Australia in round three. “It’s tough on the spirit for everyone in the team when so much work has been going on over the winter. You come in excited, driven and motivated, with the mindset you’re going to be fighting for wins, then that’s not the case.

“Then you think ‘Okay, maybe second or third’ and that’s not the case and it cascades a bit further down and you go through the motions. It’s challenging. I continue to be inspired by the people I’ve worked with and continue to put in the effort and show up. That’s the most important thing.”
