Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Forced to Stop Intrasquad Fight During Practice

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to embark on a journey in 2024 that could be one for the history books. The Chiefs became the first team since the 2003 and 2004 seasons to secure back-to-back Super Bowl wins, last accomplished by the New England Patriots dynasty under Tom Brady.

The Chiefs can do what no team has done in NFL history in 2024, by being the first to ever win the coveted three-peat Super Bowl championships. They are favored to dominate the AFC once again and have begun to practice to ensure this happens.

While the hopes are high for a Chiefs team that largely went unchanged through the offseason, the tension on the team rose to a boiling level at practice on Monday. During team drills, linebacker Drue Tranquill had to be contained by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

A video of practice from KC Sports Network showcased the offense and defense of the Chiefs engaging in a drill that turned violent. From a distance, Mahomes is shown lifting Tranquill off the ground and pulling him back from getting into a scuffle with his own teammates.

A brief scuffle at #Chiefs practice. Looked like Rashee Rice threw a ball at the defense after the play. Some shoving ensued. Think Drue Tranquill got his helmet ripped off. Didn’t last all of 30 seconds before they broke it up and got back to work. — Charles Goldman (@goldmctNFL)

A further update from AtoZ Sports Editor Charles Goldman explained what occurred in the above video.

Goldman’s post states, “A brief scuffle at #Chiefs practice. Looked like Rashee Rice threw a ball at the defense after the play. Some shoving ensued. Think Drue Tranquill got his helmet ripped off. Didn’t last all of 30 seconds before they broke it up and got back to work.”

Thankfully, the quick scuffle did not result in any player on both sides of the ball getting hurt. It’s never a good sign when the quarterback has to step in and stop fights from happening.

Most NFL teams fall victim to tense occurrences like the one in the above video, though they happen more often in joint practices. Fighting, though commonplace, is something not everyone in the league is a fan of.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin recently stated that he hopes fighting in camps will be eradicated from competitive spirit. Though the game of football is physical and players must be “tough” to play the game, fights can often lead to unnecessary injuries.

Fights can also lead to penalties during the regular season that could completely change the momentum of close games.

The good news is that Mahomes was able to step in and play the part of the team’s leader by ensuring his teammates did not resort to more injurious behavior.
