Hamilton Delights in Mercedes Experience: ‘There’s a Wealth of Affection Here’

Lewis Hamilton discussed what he hopes to achieve with Mercedes during what is his last season with the team.

Even though Toto Wolff claimed Mercedes wasn’t able to show their full potential, it became clear after the first race of the season that Mercedes would hardly be challenging Red Bull for the Championship in 2024.

The second race in Jeddah revealed that the German team might even struggle to achieve as many podiums as last year. Lewis Hamilton is ninth in the Championship after the season’s second race with one P7 and one P9.

Speaking to the media in Jeddah about what achievement with his team would make this season a good season to sign off, the seven-time World Champion said:

“I think it’s really just about how we go about our processes. It’s how we work together as a team.”

“We didn’t win the championship last year, but coming second felt like a real triumph for us – from a car that we were really struggling with to then fighting and, also as a driver, fighting in the top three for the Drivers’ Championship.”

The 39-year-old acknowledged his team’s pace disadvantage compared to the current leaders in the Championship and suggested his team just has to settle for doing their best.

“Obviously, we were a long way from first, but there were lots of wins last year. I think it’s really just giving it our all and knowing that we didn’t leave any stone unturned.”

The start of the season hasn’t been ideal not only for Mercedes but also for Hamilton himself compared to George Russell. The number 44 driver has finished twice behind his teammate so far.

Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan asserted that the 39-year-old needs a big result in the upcoming race after what he has shown so far.

Hamilton himself, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be focused too much on the results at this point of the season. He added that he is currently just focusing on enjoying the moments with his team during their last season together.

“Just embracing and enjoying the moments, every moment that I get with the team in the garage or through qualifying, just being present.”

“I think it’s easy in life not to be present in the sense of being distracted by all these other things. So I’m really enjoying engaging and working with this group, nothing feels like it’s changed. There’s a lot of love here.”
