Lewis Hamilton and George Russell receive a direct directive from Toto Wolff ahead of the Australian GP: “It’s invigorating to sense the energy and resolve coursing through the factories as we strive to unleash the car’s potential

Mercedes F1 Urges Hamilton and Russell to Shine at Australian Grand Prix

As the Formula 1 season picks up speed, the pressure mounts for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to deliver a standout performance at the upcoming Australian Grand Prix. The Mercedes team finds itself grappling with persistent challenges, prompting team principal Toto Wolff to issue a stern directive to his drivers: excel or risk falling further behind.

Despite initial optimism surrounding the W15 car, Mercedes has faltered in the early stages of the season, with Russell managing to accumulate 18 points compared to Hamilton’s meager eight. The recent race in Saudi Arabia exposed glaring weaknesses in the car’s performance, particularly in high-speed corners, leaving Wolff and his team scrambling for solutions.

“We’ve been hard at work since Jeddah building on the learnings from the first two races,” remarked Wolff, acknowledging the need for improvement. “It’s encouraging to see the potential in the W15, but there are also clear areas of improvement.”

Could George Russell hold the key to Mercedes’ choice to replace Lewis Hamilton?

“We have been working hard to understand why our performance hasn’t reflected our expectations. Improving that is a major focus. We hope to make some initial progress for Melbourne, and that work will guide our development in the weeks ahead.”

“It’s great to feel the energy and determination running through the factories as we work to unlock the potential of the car. “We left points on the table in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, we started off each weekend strongly, running our usual practice programmes, but couldn’t deliver on that initial promise.”

With the Australian Grand Prix looming, Wolff emphasized the importance of maximizing track time to gather crucial data and address the car’s shortcomings. Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, Andrew Shovlin, outlined plans to utilize practice sessions in Melbourne to tackle their issues head-on.

“We will come up with a plan for how we approach free practice in Melbourne,” Shovlin stated. “There’s a lot of work going on within the aerodynamics department, vehicle dynamics department. We’re trying to design some experiments there that will hopefully give us a direction that’s good for performance.”
