Steiner Assesses Hamilton’s Choice to Join Ferrari

Guenther Steiner, former Haas team principal, recently evaluated Lewis Hamilton’s decision to go to Ferrari in a recent interview following the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

When it was announced that the seven-time World Champion would be leaving Mercedes for Ferrari at the end of this season, it confused many fans.

Firstly, the 39-year-old has been longer with Mercedes than any other driver with any team in F1 history before him, and it was considered he would now finish his career with Silver Arrows.

Secondly, the German team actually finished ahead of the team from Maranello last season, so it didn’t seem like Hamilton would be going to Ferrari because of the better-performing car.

However, as it turns out, after the third race of the 2024 season at Albert Park Circuit, Ferrari is much faster than Mercedes at the moment.

All of a sudden, it seems that Hamilton made the right decision from the performance perspective, and former F1 team principal Guenther Steiner confirmed it when he told Sky Sports:

“It looks like he is making the right decision. He did that when he left McLaren to go to Mercedes. So maybe he’s got this one right as well.”

The seven-time World Champion already made a similar kind of decision in the past when he left superior McLaren for Mercedes, which didn’t seem so strong at the time.

But as we now know, the German team went on to win eight consecutive Constructors’ Championship titles. The 58-year-old added:

“But I think for him, it’s more about a new challenge. He was in a team for 11 years, won seven championships, good relationships there.”

“It’s just I think that the last step of his career he wants a new challenge. And obviously the last challenge being Ferrari, it is a nice thing to have the opportunity to do this.”
