Amid Mercedes’ search for Lewis Hamilton’s replacement, Toto Wolff was seen talking to Max Verstappen’s father Jos in Bahrain. Here’s what he said when asked about it.
After it was announced that Lewis Hamilton will be leaving Mercedes at the end of 2024, the team is now in search of a new driver for 2025.
Interestingly, one of the drivers mentioned in connection with the team is Max Verstappen.
While the Dutch driver is locked in with Red Bull until the end of 2028, it is not known whether there are any exit clauses included in the deal, but that is often the case with long-term contracts.
If such a clause exists, Verstappen’s move to Mercedes in 2025 would not be out of the realm of possibility.
The rumours only intensified after Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was seen talking to Max’s father Jos Verstappen in Bahrain.
When asked about this interaction, the Austrian explained:

“I have known Jos for 25 years – with ups and downs and I simply congratulated on his son’s achievement. Max is driving in a galaxy of his own,” he told F1-Insider.
Asked if Max could end up at Mercedes as Hamilton’s replacement in 2025, the Austrian said:
“Everything is possible.”
After the Bahrain Grand Prix, Toto was again asked if there is a chance that Max could be on his way to Mercedes.
“I think the driver will always choose the quickest car,” he said.
“That is fundamentally what it’s all about. At the moment the Red Bull is the quickest car, so that will obviously be the priority,” Wolff concluded.
